Orange You Glad We Didn't Say Banana?

With ModernDomestic ailing, it has fallen to WonkthePlank to titillate the ‘sphere with a guest blog recipe so delicious, so outrageously flavorful that the masses will drive her beloved Blog Stats up to heretofore unseen highs. That, we think, is truly the best medicine.

With that in mind, we proudly present:

Orange Mac and Cheese with Ants on a Log
A WonkthePlank mainstay from our bachelor days

Ingredients

1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup butter
7.25 oz. elbow macaroni
1 bag orange powdered cheese
2 sticks celery
peanut butter
raisins

Directions

First, boil some water in a pot and cook the macaroni for 7-10 minutes or until tender.

While the macaroni is cooking, wash the celery (ideally, it should be aged 2-3 weeks), spread some peanut butter on and stick your ants (raisins) on top.

Once the macaroni is done, add the powdered Plank sauce, the butter and the milk. Stir vigorously until the macaroni turns a bold, shocking orange.

Now, some cooks may not have the virtuosity required to prepare the pièce de résistance that is Orange Macaroni and Cheese with Ants on a Log. But for these yeoman chefs, fear not! We have lower hanging fruit – in the form of a banana.

Ingredients

1 banana
1 toothpick

Directions

Peel, then slice the banana into bite-sized chunks. Insert toothpick. Serve chilled.

Way to go Wonk! I never realized how elegant banana could be sliced with a toothpick inserted. And the mac and cheese looks suspiciously similar to a certain blue box that was popular in our household once upon a time. Alex considered that box of orange mystery ingredients the only mac and cheese worth consuming and would belly ache when I would attempt to serve him a homemade version that was white. Great blog!

I’m thinking of serving banana at my next dinner party. Which do you recommend – round or flat toothpicks? Also, I’ve found that my local Whole Foods disposes of celery long before it’s properly aged. I’ve found an adequate substitute in the food service dumpster at one of our local colleges.

so adorable. i, too, eat pure crap when i’m sick: Kraft blue box, Lipton noodle “soup”, Jello, Jif on toast, buttered noodles, chicken tenders. basically anything that brings me back to childhood is comforting. my parents didn’t even serve a lot of junk–but it’s what i gravitate toward when ailing.
