We are currently offering Cake Decorating Workshops starting March 1st at Amphora Bakery in Herndon, Virginia! Here is a bit more information on the classes:

Our cake decorating classes for beginners consist of four 2-hour classes, on the first four Tuesday’s in March or the first four Wednesday’s in March. Your instructor is an Amphora cake decorating and baking expert and creates cakes that truly are a work of edible art. You will learn how to decorate a beautiful cake from start to finish. We will start off slow ... no 5-tier wedding cakes in this class; we will save that for later!

On your first day of class you will
receive a goody bag filled with
baking supplies. Items include
4” offset spatula
8” offset spatula
decorating bags
3, 8” classic amphora sponge cakes
12” round cake boards
12” boxes
decorating tips
couplers
rose nail
1/2 pound of white fondant

In the first class you will learn the fundamentals of baking. We will have a demonstration on how to frost a cake and demonstrate various border techniques.

When you arrive to the second class, our baking staff will have an 8” cake prepared for you, we will frost together. We will work on new piping strategies and learn how to create butter cream roses. You will finish you first cake in this class.

During the third class you will begin to decorate your second cake, practicing butter cream roses, several new flower designs and other fun figurines.

On your fourth and final class you will be introduced to a new technique called “basket weave”. You will finish your third cake using basket weave, roses and other fun concepts learned in class.

Tuesday Classes will be held from
6:30 - 8:30, March 1,8,15 , and 22.
Wednesday Classes will be held from 6:30 - 8:30, March 2,9,16, and 23.

I took Wilton I & II at the Wheaton, MD Michael's and it was a thorough class taught by a great instructor. Personally, though, I was mildly turned off to cake decorating when I discovered how much shortening goes into buttercream. Ew. I'd prefer to not know and enjoy my sweet treats in blissful ignorance! :)

Oh yes, I do. I do. It helps, but my cakes still don't have those super-smooth polished professional sides. Maybe I need a turnstile?

But can you really learn how to make food from an online class? Like, I feel like I could do that from a book and the Internet - if I'm going to take a class I want in-person instruction.

Mmmm, chocolate . . .

Do you chill your cake for a bit after the crumb coat? That helps, it makes the crumb coat a little more solid. Decorating cakes is fun!

Oooh, that sounds awesome. Although I definitely want a participation class - I've seen people frost cakes on TV, and I still can't do it!

I've assisted several classes at Sur La Table taught by Nick Malgieri (I might be completley butchering his name). These were all demo classes, but I've never in my life seen anyone frost a cake better than him. It was like magic!
