So, about a month ago my good friends at Moment Magazine approached me about doing the photography for their food feature, “The Talk of the Table.” Joan Nathan, the food writer and cookbook author, was writing the summer piece on the history of borscht, and they wanted me to photograph some of the recipes included in the piece.
Well, one of my photos actually made it to the Moment cover! Yes, in case you’re wondering – that is a white bowl from Ikea, which I’m sure many of you have in your own kitchen cupboards. I’m totally thrilled with the opportunity, and making and photographing borscht gave me a whole new appreciation for the dish.
- Check out Joan Nathan’s Talk of the Table piece, with another of my photos.
- Check out Nathan’s recipes for watermelon borscht, hot meat borscht with beets and cabbage, and cold summer borscht with sour cream.
And here are a couple more pics from the shoot that didn’t make it to the magazine.

I LOVE summer borscht! Regular borscht is great too, but there’s something sublime about chilled delicious tangy borscht with sorrel and beet greens and chopped up boiled eggs and sour cream. YUM. Thanks for reminding me, I’m definitely going to get ingredients for that next week.
Gorgeous photos, btw! I love the little sprig of dill on top of the sour cream.
So beautiful!! How can I get my hands on a copy?
I’m so glad that there is something lovely to do with borscht! I was just talking with someone yesterday about beets and your pictures look a whole lot better than our perceptions. Is that a chip in the bowl in the second image or a lighting surprise? Very proud of you – congratulations!
No . . . that’s a chip. I only have one un-chipped bowl, sadly, and I needed two.
Yay! Congrats, Jenna. Love the pictures.
Congratulations cover girl. We’ve been saying all along that you are a very tralented photographer in addition to your baking.
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful! Congrats on the cover – you rocked it!
That’s awesome, Jenna!
