Storms and Cherry Pie

by moderndomestic on June 30, 2012

Yes, DC is in the midst of a massive power outage. And all I can do is worry about cherry pie.

Crazy storms ripped through DC last night. I went to bed before they started, but I woke up to the sound of the rain pounding on our air conditioning unit, and the wind tearing up the trees in the neighborhood. The 100+ degree days we’ve been having in The District are apparently what fueled last night’s massive storm.

Driving to our kitchen in Rockville this morning was treacherous – the streets were covered fallen trees, and many traffic lights at big intersections were out. Just so you know, it’s really hard to treat a five lane highway like a four-way stop – there are so many cars arriving at different times that no one really gets there “first.” You just have to be aggressive and make your way across – even if this freaks out your boyfriend who is having a conniption in the passenger seat.

When we actually got to the market, the heat was sweltering, and many of my customers weren’t there because they were dealing with their power outages. If my power were out, would I be going to the farmers market? Nope. I would be trying to get ice so I could save the contents of my refrigerator.

With 3 million people without power on the East Coast, I’m extremely grateful that I still have power at my place – and at my kitchen. These are the things that you just have to deal with as a small business owner – they’re entirely out of my control, even if they directly affect my business. Cherry pie and cheddar jalapeno quiche seem like small concerns amidst this state of emergency. But they’re my livelihood, so I can’t help but hope that things will be more settled tomorrow and bring people out to the Bloomingdale market.

That cherry pie looks luscious. Hope your fans/customers can find their way to pick up the goodies. It looks perfect for the 4th of July picnic, which I suspect many people will be doing …..!
